Treat Yourself to an Elegant Weekend Escape at Fort Belle Fontaine

The fort was originally built by the French in 1799 as a trading post. However, it soon became apparent that the fort could also be used as a military outpost. In 1804, the Lewis and Clark expedition stopped at Fort Belle Fontaine while exploring the American West. In 1808, it was officially designated as a military post by the United States government. The area continued to play an important role in westward expansion and the development of St. Louis, Missouri until it was abandoned in 1826. Now visitors can explore the remains of the fort, including several buildings that have been restored to their original appearance.

Fort Belle Fontaine was an important early settlement in the American Midwest. The site, which is located on 305.6 acres of land near the Missouri River, was chosen for its strategic location and natural resources. The nearby Belle Fontaine Spring provided a source of fresh water, while the nearby Coldwater Creek was a good source of timber. In addition, the site had a 50-acre upland prairie that could be used for grazing cattle.

The place was once a critical outpost for the United States Military, but today it is a popular destination for hikers and bicyclists. The fort is located on the north side of the Missouri River, and it offers a paved loop for 1.70 miles. In addition, hikers can also take a longer hike along Bellefontaine Road. Along the way, they will find an outdoor fireplace, picnic tables, and many opportunities to see wildlife. This locale is a great place to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. It is also surrounded by eateries and cafes, making it the perfect place to take a break after a long day of sightseeing. Online reservations are required for tours, so be sure to plan ahead.

Fort Belle Fontaine is a historical site that is open year-round for visitors to enjoy. The site offers plenty of opportunities to explore the outdoors, and pets are welcome as long as they are kept on a leash. This locality is also a great place for service animals, as there are plenty of opportunities to get some exercise and fresh air. Smoking is only allowed outdoors, and donations are accepted to help maintain the site. So whether you’re interested in history or just looking for a unique place to visit, Fort Belle Fontaine is definitely worth a visit.
